Final Grade Needed Calculator

Enter your current grade, how much it counts, your target grade, and how much the final exam counts — and find out the score you need on the final.

How to use

  1. Enter your current grade as a percentage (e.g. 82 for 82%).
  2. Enter the weight of your current grade as a percentage of the total course grade (e.g. 60 if coursework is 60% of the final grade).
  3. Enter the target grade you want to achieve (e.g. 85).
  4. Enter the weight of the final exam (e.g. 40 if the final is worth 40%).
  5. Click Calculate to see the score you need on the final exam.

Examples

Example 1: Current grade 82%, weight 60%, target 85%, final weight 40%. Needed on final = (85 − 82×0.60) / 0.40 = (85 − 49.2) / 0.40 = 35.8 / 0.40 = 89.5%. You need 89.5% on the final.
Example 2: Current 90%, weight 70%, target 85%, final weight 30%. Current weighted = 90×0.70 = 63. Needed = 85 − 63 = 22 pts from final → 22/0.30 = 73.33%. Target already within reach.
Example 3: Current 70%, weight 50%, target 90%, final weight 50%. Needed = (90 − 70×0.50) / 0.50 = (90 − 35) / 0.50 = 55/0.50 = 110%. Impossible — target cannot be reached.
Example 4: Current 88%, weight 80%, target 85%, final weight 20%. Current weighted = 88×0.80 = 70.4. Target 85 already exceeds 70.4+20×100=90.4 max. Needed = (85−70.4)/0.20 = 14.6/0.20 = 73%. Achievable.

FAQ

Q: How is the final exam score calculated?
A: The formula is: needed = (target − current × currentWeight) ÷ finalWeight, where all values are percentages. This gives the minimum score you need on the final to reach your target.

Q: What does it mean if the result is above 100%?
A: It means your target grade is not achievable even with a perfect score on the final. You may want to adjust your target or check that your current grade and weight values are correct.

Q: What if the result is negative?
A: A negative result means you have already exceeded your target grade with your current score — you are already above the target.

Q: Do the weights need to add up to 100%?
A: They should — the current weight plus the final weight should total 100% for a typical course. If they don't, the calculation still runs but may not reflect your actual course structure.

Q: Can I use this for more than two components?
A: This calculator handles a single current grade and a single final. For multiple remaining assessments, combine them into one equivalent weight first, or calculate each separately.
