- Tracking progress toward honors (Dean's List, magna cum laude, etc.).
Examples
Example 1: Three classes — English (3 cr, A), Math (4 cr, B), History (3 cr, B+). GPA = (3×4.0 + 4×3.0 + 3×3.3) / 10 = 39.9 / 10 = 3.99.
Example 2: Five classes all B (3 cr each). GPA = (5 × 3 × 3.0) / 15 = 45 / 15 = 3.0.
Example 3: One class, 6 credits, grade A-. GPA = 6 × 3.7 / 6 = 3.7.
Example 4: Four classes — two As (3 cr each), two Cs (4 cr each). GPA = (2×3×4.0 + 2×4×2.0) / 14 = (24+16) / 14 = 2.86.
FAQ
Q: How is GPA calculated?
A: GPA = total grade points ÷ total credits, where grade points = credits × grade value. Each letter grade maps to a value on the 4.0 scale.
Q: What grade values does this calculator use?
A: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, D-=0.7, F=0.0. This is the standard unweighted U.S. scale.
Q: Is this weighted or unweighted GPA?
A: This is an unweighted GPA calculator. Weighted GPAs (which give extra points for AP/IB/honors courses) require a different scale and are not covered here.
Q: Can I leave the course name blank?
A: Yes — the course name field is optional. It's only used in the breakdown table for your reference.
Q: Does this replace my official GPA?
A: No. Your institution may use a different scale or weighting. Use this for estimates and planning, not as an official record.
